Excursions in the hinterland of Romagna
L'hinterland of Romagna is full of characteristic medieval villages to visit.
You can spend a day of culture immersing yourself in a world of the past. They are easily reached by shuttles and buses.
The Republic of San Marino (approx. 20 km)
San Marino offers its visitors a pleasant walk through the streets of the centre full of restaurants and souvenir shops, a breathtaking view from Freedom Square and an interesting visit to the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and the State Museum. The origins of this republic are ancient, it is considered the oldest republic in the world after Rome.
Santarcangelo di Romagna (approx. 23 km)
Santarcangelo is an ideal medieval village for a pleasant walk through the streets of the historic centre and for a stop in the best restaurants and osterias that offer traditional menus to be enjoyed with the best local wines. A visit to the Button Museum and the Ethnographic Museum of the customs and traditions of the people of Romagna.
Verucchio (approx. 25 km)
Verucchio was once the strongest of the Malatesta fortified towns: its fortress still shows signs of a dominating past. The hill on which Verucchio stands is located at thebeginning of the Marecchia Valleyalong the roads leading away from Rimini: a border land, therefore, that was well guarded by the castle fortifications.
Gradara (approx. 27 km)
Gradara already within the borders of the Marche region, it is less than a thirty-minute drive from Rimini. So charming as to seem immersed in a distant world, it offers a pleasant stroll through the village's cobbled streets. It is the perfect place to taste a cuisine that suffers the charm of the two lands, that of the Marche and that of Romagna. It should not be forgotten that the town walls still jealously guard the vicissitudes of the tormented love between Paolo and Francesca.
San Giovanni in Marignano (approx. 28 km)
San Giovanni in Marignano once considered the granary of the Malatesta family thanks to its fertile hills, it is now one of the most interesting villages in the hinterland of Romagna. Every year in June, the Witches' Festival, which evokes the myths of witchcraft and black magic from medieval times and brings hundreds of curious visitors to the city.
San Leo (approx. 42 km)
Saint Leo with its fortress perched on the rocky spur that dominates the Marecchia Valley all the way to the sea, with its donjon, towers and surrounding wall protecting the parade ground, is a charming village. It still guards the secrets and events of the Italian alchemist Cagliostro, who was imprisoned in the fortress of San Leo on charges of heresy.
